Ooty vs Munnar: Which Is Better? Compare Distance & Travel

I had been debating, ooty or Munnar which is better for ages before deciding to simply visit both and solve the dispute myself. All people I have ever asked about their preferences in this matter seemed to be certain of which is better, yet everyone had a completely different viewpoint, thus, it became clear for me that the only correct way of answering the question “Munnar vs Ooty” was to actually travel there.

So, here goes my experience gained from a two weeks long trip, and hopefully it will give you some useful hints, if you are struggling with the decision yourself.

Ooty vs Munnar: Which Is Better?

Truth to be told, after visiting both places, I have not been able to name any definite answer, even though I went there in the hopes of finding one. On one hand, Ooty felt very polished and easy to explore, with its toy train and gardens, adding a lot of colonial charm, which I truly enjoyed for a few days. On the other hand, Munnar felt wilder and deeper in immersion, with its endless tea gardens and stunning landscapes, making a strong impression on me before I left.

As far as my own experience is concerned, I would say that Munnar edges out Ooty just a little bit on the number of scenic and natural sights to see and variety of them, whereas Ooty has more convenient access. As a local said to me, if you like one place, you are going to like the other too, just for different reasons.

Ooty vs Munnar: Places to Visit

Here is the list of all the sights, which were worth exploring during my trip there.

Places I Visited in Ooty

  • Ooty Botanical Gardens, which is a truly wonderful place that looks great even for itself.
  • Toy Train, which I would recommend to try for anyone visiting.
  • Doddabetta Peak, with a spectacular view from there.
  • Pykara Falls, which served as a nice break from sightseeing.
  • A couple of colonial era churches, which is an unexpected bonus during your trip.

Places I Visited in Munnar

  • Eravikulam National Park, where I managed to spot a few Nilgiri tahr up close.
  • Kundala Lake, near Top Station, where I spent about an hour boating.
  • Echo Point for its acoustic qualities, however, sunrise at this location was an absolute must see for me.
  • Endless tea plantations surrounding the town, which I actually walked through twice.
  • Strolling along the Madhurapuzha River, which became one of the most favourite moments for me.

Both destinations have plenty to offer, so choose the one that suits your interests. You can also explore these places to visit in Munnar before planning your trip.

Ooty vs Munnar: Weather and Climate

As for climate, both destinations remained relatively cool during my visit. However, there were still some notable differences. Overall Ooty was chillier and windier. I would say that the best period to enjoy this destination is October – June when the temperatures vary from twenty three to twenty five degrees Celsius.

As for Munnar, it remained relatively warmer in general. However, the evenings during my visit there in winter turned out to be rather cold. The best time period for Munnar is September – March. In addition to that there is also another short period from summer months that could be great for visiting this destination, though I would suggest not coming there in July and August because of the monsoon season.

Ooty vs Munnar: Best Time to Visit

According to my own experience and locals’ advice the following would be the right time periods to choose.

DestinationBest Time to VisitWhy
OotyMarch to JuneCooler than the plains, clearer roads, pleasant sightseeing weather
MunnarAugust to NovemberJust after monsoon, lush greenery, comfortable temperatures
Munnar (Alternative)December to MarchCold, crisp winter months, great for trekking, though it is peak season

Personally, I visited Munnar in December and Ooty in April, which turned out to be pretty good timing, though my Munnar visit during high season resulted in higher costs and busier accommodation options.

Ooty vs Munnar for Honeymoon

During my trip I got the chance to meet several honeymooning couples. Based on this experience I can say that these destinations provide good possibilities for a romantic vacation. Ooty with its lakes, gardens and comfortable colonial hotels offers a romantic and peaceful environment which would fit well for a leisurely holiday of a romantic couple. However, Munnar with its impressive tea estates and misty locations seems to be an interesting choice as well.

Several newlyweds said about their visit to Munnar that it was an unforgettable experience. Personally, I would recommend to choose Munnar for a honeymoon, though Ooty could also become an excellent choice.

Ooty vs Munnar for Adventure Activities

If adventure is among the priorities, the winner would be Munnar. Munnar offers treks to Meesapulimala, jeep tours through estate roads and adventure activities such as ziplining in Munnar, which I tried near Suryanelli. Ooty provides boating and a short trek near Doddabetta. However, these opportunities cannot beat what Munnar offers.

How to Reach : Distance and Travel Time

One of the most practical aspects that I had to consider was the distance and time required to reach both locations. For starters, Munnar to ooty distance comes down to a total of around 273 kilometres, while the journey itself takes around 6 to 7 hours by road, depending on stops in between. As far as those searching for ooty to Munnar distance is concerned, the reverse of the above statement applies.

A few travel options that I considered:

  • Self drive or hired taxis, which is what I finally chose, taking around six to seven hours.
  • Bus routes connecting nearby towns.
  • However, there was no option for a direct bus route between these two places.
  • Fly to Coimbatore, which lies roughly midway between Ooty and Munnar, and then arrange for road transport to either place.

When trying to organize all this myself seems a little overwhelming, platforms such as PlanYourTour can be of help in organizing the logistics for the combined Ooty and Munnar trip.

Ooty vs Munnar: Which One Should You Choose?

By the end of the trip, my take on the matter of whether it is better to choose ooty or Munnar boiled down to personal preferences. If you have only a weekend and are looking for an easy-to-reach location with some colonial feel, then go for Ooty. However, if you are free for several days and looking for something more scenic and nature-oriented, then choose Munnar. And if you are lucky enough to combine the two within your vacation, as I did, then you will get the best of both.
